Intumescent Coatings must be tested to the FM4880
test over foam insulation. There is no use for Fire
Retardant Coatings to be used unless they have the
required testing done.
Intumescent
coatings have been used in homes and commercial
facilities for a decade. The new requirements of a
Intumescent Coating is that they must pass the
ignition barrier and thermal barrier rating. A
Intumescent Paint must be tested for both applications.
Coatings have to pass a 4 minute 12 second test to
become a ignition rated product. Thermal barrier testing
for a Intumescent Paint must be tested on walls and
ceilings and it the first 15 minutes of a E-119 test.
Intumescent Coatings have a hard time trying to pass
this test. Make sure that you get proper documentation
on a Intumscent Paint before you purchase it.
Intumescent Coatings are very fast and very cost
effective to apply. Intumescent Coatings can be tinited
for any color.
